Experience
A bit about me-
I am a certified teacher in the state of Virginia, as well as in the State of Michigan. Fun fact, at one time I was also certified to teach in the state of Illinois, my husband’s home state. I earned my bachelors and master’s degree in Education from Western Michigan University and went on to teach at both the high school and college levels. I taught for 14 years in the public school system and have over 25 years of experience teaching in both the public and private sectors. I have four children, 2 who are 2e learners (Gifted and ADHD), 1 with ADD, and 1 having ADHD, along with some learning disabilities (Dyslexia/Dysgraphia). Each also has a sensory processing disorder which is common among children with ADD/ADHD, two also suffered with anxiety. This is the primary reason I embarked on learning how to assist and better support those with ADD/ADHD diagnosis. I am happily married to my amazing ADHD husband; we are going on 25 years. Having a spouse or partner with ADHD is an interesting dynamic and if you find yourself in that situation or you yourself have ADHD, I’d love to offer you some articles and support.
After taking a sabbatical from teaching to stay home and assist my own children with their learning I created and ran a Homeschool Co-op serving over 50 students in preschool through 8th grade. We focused on the areas of Science, Art, History, and PE, many of these students were also ADHD/ADD/2e learners that traditional schooling didn’t work for.
As a mom of 4 amazing kids, each with their own unique learning challenges, I have spent the last 10 years educating myself on how to better teach and advocate for these unique learners. I now use that knowledge to help other parents and students, as well as educating and assisting teachers on how to best meet individual learners needs in a complex classroom. There is no one size fits all in learning.
My experience includes working with students both in and out of the classroom that have been diagnosed as: ADD/ADHD, Autistic, Learning Disabled (Dyslexia/Dysgraphia), Sensory Processing Disorder, 2E Learners, Homeschoolers, deficient in Executive functioning Skills, and Gifted and Talented.
