3 Do Not's of ADHD Parenting

  1. Do not Allow only "open ended" supports in a 504 or IEP. For example, "after school test retakes available if you need it." Unless a student is fully self-advocating for themselves this a recipe for disaster.

  2. Do not assume your students struggle is a lack of motivation. Strong executive Function skills are necessary to create a plan, and follow it through. Forgetfulness is an ADHD/ADD symptom not a sign your student doesn't care.

  3. Do not assume someone with ADHD will figure out how to manage their own Executive Function Deficiencies. If your child didn't know how to swim would you throw them into the pool and tell them to figure out what they needed to survive themselves? Forming new neuro pathways and learning new skills takes time and support. As a parent patience, and consistency pay off in the end.
